It played a central role in Durbanville’s civic life, hosting the first Village Management Committee meetings, and later, the very first Municipal Council meetings in 1901 after Durbanville was officially registered as a municipality. In 1927, the property was sold to Robert John Meneely, a charming and eccentric clockmaker. He transformed the building into four semi-detached homes—The Oaks, Ingle Nook, My Vreugd, and The Retreat—and filled the space with a cacophony of antique clocks. Following the passing of Meneely, the Durbanville Municipality acquired the property in 1978, initiating its gradual restoration. By 1981, the Durbanville Cultural Society was established to oversee the building’s transformation into a centre for the arts. In partnership with the local council, the site was reimagined as an Arts and Culture hub. In 1984, Rust-en-Vrede was officially declared a National Monument, preserving its rich architectural and civic heritage. The building has many stories and hidden treasures—visit us so we can take you on a tour. It has not only been a physical home to Mr. Meneely, but also a home to artists, visitors, and the dedicated gallery team for many years. Today, the complex includes an Art Gallery, Clay Museum, artist studios, and a café for visitors to enjoy.
