For a business that serves a geographic area, the free listing that appears in search results and on the map is frequently the single largest source of enquiries — and it is the marketing asset most small businesses leave half-finished.
Claim it, then complete it
A listing may already exist without you creating it, assembled from other sources. Claiming it gives you control of what it says.
Then fill in everything: the exact category, hours including public holidays, the service area if you travel to customers, what you offer, and the attributes that apply. Listings that are complete are shown more than listings that are not, and the difference is substantial.
Get the basics exactly right
Name, address and telephone number, written identically wherever they appear — on your website, in directories, on social profiles. Inconsistency between sources makes it harder for search engines to be confident the listings refer to the same business.
Use a local number where you have one, and make sure somebody answers it.
Photographs do more than descriptions
The premises from the street so people can find it, the inside, the team, and the work itself. Businesses with real photographs get materially more engagement than those with a logo and nothing else.
Replace them occasionally. A profile whose most recent photograph is four years old reads as a business that may no longer be trading.
Reviews are the ranking factor you can influence
Ask satisfied customers, at the moment they are pleased, with a direct link. Most people will do it if asked once and given something easy to click.
Reply to all of them, including the critical ones — briefly, without arguing, with what you have done about it. Prospective customers read the replies more carefully than the reviews, because the replies tell them what happens when something goes wrong.
Post, occasionally
Updates, offers, new services. It costs a few minutes and it signals an active business.
The bar is low here, which is precisely the opportunity: most competing listings are dormant.
Keep it current
Changed hours, a move, a new number, a temporary closure. A customer who arrives at a closed business because the listing was wrong is a customer lost and frequently a review earned.
Check it once a quarter alongside your other admin. It takes five minutes and it is the highest-return five minutes in small business marketing.
