Equity and investment
Equity funding means selling part of your business in exchange for capital. Investors share the risk and the reward: there are no repayments, but you give up a share of ownership and, often, some control.
Angel investors and venture capital back businesses that can grow fast. Development funders such as the NEF and IDC take equity in businesses that meet their mandate. All of them will want to see a clear plan, a strong team and evidence that customers want what you sell.

Common questions
What is the difference between debt and equity funding?
Debt is borrowed and repaid with interest; you keep full ownership. Equity is exchanged for a share of the business; nothing is repaid, but the investor shares in future profits and decisions.
When should I look for investors?
Usually when you have proof that customers want your product and a credible plan to grow faster than you could with your own money or a loan.
